Innovation: A new method, idea or product that have made a significant positive change.
With 2020 coming to an end, let us recount some of the innovations that had the most impact this year. You may have heard or even used some of these already, let us find out.
Best of Smartphone Innovations - Foldable Tech
Innovation in the field of smartphone and tablet devices has always been growing at a fast pace. For 2020, the best innovation for smartphones was making them foldable. With Samsung’s release of their new foldable phone early this year, many companies have such as Motorola, Oppo, and Huawei have jumped, or plan to jump, onto this innovative design.
The main benefit of a foldable phone is that they offer a large screen that you can enjoy on a compact device that fits in your pocket. As a result, these larger screens offer better multitasking capabilities than your regular smartphones. With the extra space and processing power, these phones can run 3 or 4 apps at the same time.
Foldable phones are future tech and not a passing fad. Find out why here. However, this technology does not stop at foldable phones, it has open doors toward other innovations. There are rumours of foldable laptops and even TVs in the making. Foldable tech will revolutionise how we use our devices.
Working From Home - Zoom
Zoom offers a reliable and easy-to-use videoconferencing software. Its app runs on desktops, mobile devices, and telephones. Many of us have heard of Zoom and even used it for work or for school.
With pandemic lock-downs this year forcing people to stay and work from home. Zoom has provided an environment where businesses and organisations can still function as normal. Not to mention this is also true for schools and universities, as students are able to attend class from home and still be able to learn.
With this innovation making working from home easier, more and more companies are embracing the idea of making it permanent. Transforming their business into an online one.
Transparent Tech
In August 2020, Xiaomi launched the world’s first mass-produced transparent TV; Mi TV LUX Transparent Edition. This see-through TV displays images that appear to be “floating in the air”. It uses a transparent organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology. Which made it possible to have an edge-to-edge display that looks like a simple glass screen, allowing viewers to see through to the other side.
This innovation has introduced and made possible the idea of transparent technology. They may bring to life the idea of smart walls and smart desks. Placing a transparent glass screen onto a surface will enable you to display whatever is on your device onto the glass screen. You could use to watch movies, display artworks and photos, play video games, or use it for work. When not in-use they will blend into the background. These ideas will increase work productivity and revolutionise the way we enjoy entertainment.
Small chip. Giant leap - Apple M1 Chip
Apple has developed an innovative computer chip for their Mac. It delivers incredible performance, revolutionary power efficiency, and custom-engineered technologies. With M1’s giant leap in performance, Apple claims that along with being the world’s best CPU performance per watt. It is the world’s fastest CPU core that uses low power silicon.
“The isn’t an upgrade. It’s a breakthrough. - Apple Inc.
Until now, a Mac needed many chips to deliver all its features. M1 has combined everything into a signal system on a chip (SoC), delivering a new level of integration.
M1 will speed through tasks whilst using minimal power. So from editing family photos to checking your emails to playing games to watching movies. This new processor will perform it all, and only using a fraction of the power.
This new chip is only a starting point for Apple. This is Apple’s first-generation processor, designed to replace those in their weakest and cheapest devices. Soon, they will release even better chip for their high-end laptops and desktops, or create a whole lineup of computer chips.
Security & Health - Exposure Notifications
Google and Apple have cooperated to create the Exposure Notifications System. This will help governments and our global community fight this pandemic though contract tracing.
This software has been incorporated into the operating systems of Google’s Android phones and Apple’s iPhones. It uses Bluetooth to tell whether people have spent a long amount of time near one another. This software will notify any persons who may have been exposed to a person who has tested positive for COVID-19.
If people don’t trust it, they won’t use it. Thus, This system was also designed to protect your privacy. It will protect your private information. It will not share your identity or location with anyone.
Public health authorities around the world are building apps with this system to help their contact tracing efforts. This will help in minimising the spread of COVID-19.
