Self-isolation, Lockdowns and Curfews (COVID-19)
Due to the severity of COVID-19, countries from all over the world have implemented stringent measures to slow the spread. From national lockdown to school closures. Many countries have even enforced curfews to keep their citizens indoor indefinitely.
In Australia, people are restricted to only leaving their home for essential work, exercise, supplies, food or medicine. Anyone with non-essential travel will be fined heavily.
These extreme interventions are crucial to slow down and eventually stop the spread in order to protect the vulnerable populations survive this COVID-19 pandemic.
Stringent Measures in Slowing the Spread of COVID-19
According to a study done by the Imperial College London COVID-19 Response Team, implementing stringent measures such as lockdowns can potentially reduce reproduction of the virus.
There are currently two methods of reducing people from getting infected. This includes; mitigation and suppression.
- Mitigation: isolating suspected COVID-19 cases and social distancing the populations that are in high risks such as elderly people. This will help reduce health care demand and protect us.
- Suppression: implementing lockdowns indefinitely to keep the entire population at home. This is intended to reduce the case numbers to low levels.
