Gaming has come along way since its first roots and now combined with cloud technology its taken a new leap. Here is what you need to know about xCloud and what you need to get started.

What is xCloud?

Microsoft Project xCloud is a gaming cloud service which brings gaming right to your mobile or tablet. It doesn't require you to have any high tech systems. Your android phone or tablet with version 6.0 or higher is more than enough.

This service is done via data centres running across countries which host games on Microsoft servers. In short, You're playing a game on a server and using your internet connection to stream it. Now that we have some insight into the tech lets start with what we need to immerse in this gaming experience. For more information on xCloud services, check out their cloud gaming site.

Devices

You're going to need an android mobile device or tablet to start with. Wondering why IOS is not available? Well, due to a policy issue with App store where game titles require reviewing, xCloud on IOS is still under review. Watch out! xCloud may launch on IOS in 2021.

So you got an android device with android version 6.0 or above, what's next?

Well, you're going to need a controller and you can purchase an Xbox one controller which has Bluetooth capabilities and pair it with your device. You can get more information on Xbox controllers on their main webpage, or if you have a controller, you can view their guide on controller readiness.

Hold up there is another option! Razer inc. has released a mobile controller known as the Razer Kishi Universal Mobile Gaming Controller which gives a portable game console experience for android phones. Head on over to Razer.com to find out more.

Subscription

Now you got the hardware, its time to opt into Microsoft Xbox services. The game titles which are available for you on xCloud are given off the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership subscription.

This subscription allows you to access over 3500 game titles, play online with friends and stream content as you please. However, the best part is, you only need one account and one subscription to freely play on your Xbox console, mobile device and PC. The xCloud subscription is attached to your user account which can be accessed from multiple devices.

Memberships are available for AUD $15.95 per month. For more information check out the Xbox Game Pass webpage.

Next, you’ll need to download the Xbox app on your Andriod mobile device and your all set to go.

Important

Of course, you're going to need a stable internet connection or a mobile data connection such as 4G or 5G. Apart from that once you got the network connection, membership and devices ready, your all set to go!

Microsoft has offered xCloud to most western regions at the moment with hopes of further expansion. However, xCloud is currently unavailable in Australia. Fear not! xCloud is estimated to launch in Australia beginning of 2021.

It is important to mention that the battery life of your device will vary depending on factors such as network connection, device model and the duration of the game. So I wouldn't have a high expectation on long battery life while playing a cloud service game.

Conclusion

The set up for xCloud is fairly flexible, and you can game on the go as long as your network connection is stable. With over 3500 game titles and streaming capabilities, this is a great addition to your entertainment package.

Microsoft xCloud is a fundamental step in terms of cloud technology, taking how we use cloud systems to a whole new level by making it portable and flexible.
